The Active Area is the dimensions (length by height) of the conductive area in LCD glass.

Active Matrix LCD
An Active Matrix LCD contains Thin Film Transistors (TFT), a type of LCD flat-panel display screen in which each pixel is controlled by one to four transistors. These screens have relatively large viewing angles, faster response and more colour saturation.

A/D Converter
Analogue to Digital (A/D) Converters are used with LCD monitors with an analogue interface. The analogue signal is converted into a digital signal for display on an LCD panel. LCD monitors with only a digital interface require a dedicated graphics adapter and connectors, which come in varied formats.

Aliasing
Aliasing refers to visual effects showing jagged edges (jaggies) in text, icons and graphic objects. Anti-aliasing refers to software compensation that minimizes this effect.

Aperture Ratio
The Aperture Ratio is the light transmitting area of a pixel divided by its screen area (subpixel pitch x row pitch / screen area).

Aspect Ratio
The Aspect Ratio is the ratio between the width and the height of a frame or a screen. Many flat displays have ratios of 4:3 including VGA (640x480), SVGA (800x600), XGA (1026x768), UXGA (1600x1200). Other panels have different ratios such as the 5:4 ratio of SXGA (1280x1024).
